Making the Most of the Life You Have

First and foremost: Count your blessings. You can say this many different ways, depending on how you feel about religion and spirituality, but look at all the GOOD things in your life. Look at, and show appreciation for, the people in your life. Keep counting those blessings and watch them increase.

Second: Remember that everything happens for a reason. We may not be aware of this reason, or understand it. In fact, most “reasons” are totally beyond our human comprehension. Adversity, in some way, shape, or form, happens to all of us. But understand that this is all a part of the “big picture.” We are always exactly where we are supposed to be. Maybe years from now we’ll be able to look back and figure out why, but that doesn’t really matter now. Your life is your life.

Third: Remember that we are creating our lives every single moment with the choices that we make. We cannot go back, but we can go forward. Where we go from here is up to us. Dream new dreams. Reach for new goals. Live your life.

How to feel like you’re on vacation without leaving home? Here are my suggestions!

? Hide your clocks! Don’t wear a watch. Go all day without looking at the time. Sleep when you’re tired, eat when you’re hungry – follow your body clock.
? Spend a day in silence. This is a HUGE challenge for most people, so if you need to start small, try going an hour in silence, then two, then more. That means no phone calls, no television and no reading, either! Reading is engaging in conversation with the author – keep this about tuning in to your inner self, connecting with nature.
? Make fancy blended drinks and serve them with little umbrellas and maraschino cherries! Anything with coconut milk will feel festive and tropical.
? Go barefoot.
? Schedule an in-home massage.
? Play world music and dance around the kitchen with abandon!
? Meditate.

Handling Holiday Stress

When you run out of wrapping paper:
-Use plain brown paper bags, and red and green markers to draw holly sprigs, ormanents, write Merry Christmas and TO and FROM.
-Use aluminum foil!
-Use old Christmas stockings as a gift bag.
-Use fabric – a Christmas patterned apron, or a snow cap, and tie with ribbon.
-Decorate a box with stickers, cut out pictures from magazines (Christmas trees, etc.)
-Use shoelaces as ribbon

When you burn your main dish for holidays guests:
-Say: “Looks like we’re going vegetarian tonight!”
-Cook up a batch of rice to extend what you’ve already got to serve. Rice goes with everything, and you can add herbs and seasonings, cheese, almonds or raisins, to make it look “fancy.” It’s filling, and only takes 20 minutes to cook. And it’s probably in your pantry right now!

When unexpected guests show up:
-Go with the flow… the more the merrier!
-Remember that you are giving a gift by providing the space at your home for this gathering, so don’t feel obligated to wrap something up to give in return.
-Grab a box of crackers from the cupboard, and raid the refrigerator. What do you have on hand? A can of olives, a jar of artichoke hearts, a can of baked beans, some fresh carrots… any of these can be turned into an hor d’eourve.
-Put some Christmas music on the CD player, and now you’ve got a party!

When your child walks in on you wrapping Santa’s presents:
-This totally depends on the age of the child. In most cases you can say that you are helping Santa, like all parents do, because Santa is so busy. Don’t offer more info than they ask for. Respond to each question one at a time. Don’t get mad, or flustered, but let them know that Christmas is special and that you’re trying to make it special for them.

When you are unable to get something your child really wants:
-Prepare them beforehand. You can explain in terms of finances, or age… i.e. “That present costs a lot of money, and those kind of things usually come from parents. Why don’t I help you make a list so that we have lots of things you want that your relatives and I can choose from, and you’ll be surprised and happy no matter what you get.” Or “The law says that you have to be 16 before you can drive an electric scooter. Let’s put that on next year’s list.”
-If your child opens his present and is disappointed even after you did your best, that’s okay. It’s our job as parents to help our children strengthen their character, not to fulfill their every wish. Go over all the good things of the day, and emphasize what is really important. After all, Christmas is not about “things” it’s about family and the love we share – not just on this one day but everyday.

Happiness Helpers

1) Abyangha: This is a massage from the Ayurvedic tradition of India. You use warm sesame oil. Simply take about 2-4 ounces of sesame oil, (I use a little travel bottle to put it in), warm it up to body temp by placing it in hot water in your bathroom sink for a few minutes. Put a little oil in the palm of your hand, and then gently massage long on the limbs and round on the joints. Pay special attention to the top of your head, your ears, and the soles of your feet. This soothes your nervous system, relaxes your muscles and helps your skin to release toxins. Leave the oil on your skin for a few minutes, and follow with a nice warm shower. Fabulous!
2) Aroma and color therapy: Both orange, the color, and orange, the fragrance, are well-known mood-lifters. "Happy" from Clinique Cosmetics is a perfume that liberally uses orange scent, and even the packaging is a cheery bright orange. You can use orange easily at home- grate some orange peel and boil it over the stove to fill the kitchen with fragrance. Wear an orange scarf or tee-shirt to pick up your spirits, and overcome fatigue or depression. Light an orange candle.
3) Bach Flowers: These flower essences work on the emotional causes of stresses that can cause illness. "Impatiens" helps to relieve mental and physical tension., It should be used when you feel irritable or impatient. "Rock Water" helps you to relax when you overwork or are hard on yourself. "White Chestnut" is best for getting rid of worry and unwanted thoughts. Just add a few drops of Bach Flowers to a glass of water and sip throughout the day. Or for more immediate relief, place a drop or two directly onto your tonge.
4) Homeopathy: These remedies are readily available at most health food stores. "Ignatia amara" is used for emotional strain, mental stress. "Phorphorus" is used for anxiety. "Calms Forte is a combination of homeopathic medicines used for nervous tension and for insomnia.
5) Meditation: Meditation is the single most important way that you can reduce stress in your life. A regular 20-minute meditation routine in the morning and before bed will clear your mind and deeply relax your body. This, in turn, helps to lower your heart rate, relax your muscles, improve your breathing, and bring your stress level down. It will also help you gain valuable insights and allow you to understand yourself better. If a 20-minute meditation does not fit into your schedule, 5-minute meditations throughout the day will also give you great benefits.

Christmas In July

Christmas in July
by Lissa Coffey

July 31: One of the hottest days of the year. I slip on some sandals to pad down the blistering driveway and retrieve the day’s mail. What do I find amidst the usual real estate solicitations and utility bills? The Neiman-Marcus Christmas catalog!

Is it just me, or has time seemed to have just blurred into one big “whoosh” that’s impossible to keep up with?

Retailers have followed their own calendars for decades. The problem is that since we’re subject to their timing and publicity efforts, we get sucked into this warped reality. We’re supposed to shop for bathing suits when it’s pouring down rain, and buy holiday gifts during a heat wave. We must stock up on back-to-school supplies now, because if we wait until we need them, in September, the backpacks and binders will all be gone to make way for the Valentine’s displays.

Movie studios have gotten into the game as well. While we’re relaxing at the theatre, they’re showing us previews of movies they’ve got coming out six months to a year from today! What’s the strategy here? Bring your Filofax and pencil it in, say, 47 Saturdays from now?

And now, my own children have been putting the clock into some kind of fast-forward mode. It couldn’t have been that long ago that I was taking them to “Mommy and Me” classes. I thought we just went shopping for shoes, and now they’re too small already? Somehow my little guys went from Baby Gap to the skateboard stores and I hardly had a chance to clean out their drawers!

What’s happening with this world? Before, I would roll my eyes when maternity mail-order offers came in the mail. Now I’m on some list that has me pegged as a potential AARP member. This can’t be! I’m not ready to retire… I’m not even ready for the weekend.

Never have we been more keenly aware of the passage of time. There are clocks in our kitchen appliances, and digitized time-keepers built into our cell phones, pagers and computers. We can’t drive more than a few miles without seeing some kind of clock prominently displayed on the top of a building. Yet we still need excuses for being late because we can’t seem to keep up with it all.

One morning, as I was driving my son Freddy to school, I started getting nervous when the disc jockey said, “It’s 7-0-2,” and that didn’t jive with either my watch or the clock on the dashboard. And then my son calmly explained to me that the DJ was announcing the next musical group, and not the time.

The build-up to holidays and major events like the Olympics, the election, or the Super Bowl, is so monumental that we’re turning into “future-livers.” That is, we are more often looking forward in time, than enjoying the time that is ours, right here and right now. So, while we’re planning for Christmas in July, we’re missing the glory of the summer sun. While we’re dashing from place to place to fit everything into our busy schedules, we’re missing out on the beauty and peace of the present moment.

Enough is enough! Before our lives spin entirely out of control, I have a proposal. Since we can’t get Superman to fly around the planet and reverse time, we need to take matters into our own hands. Let’s live in the NOW, and appreciate the moment we’re in.

Our agendas could consist of soaking up every precious minute that we have left of our summer. We may schedule in time for spontaneity and do-nothingness. Fresh-squeezed lemonade is to be savored in the shade. Popsicles are to be appreciated poolside. In present-moment awareness, somehow all is right with the world, and time stands still. And in the stillness of our mind, we can take snapshots of this time, and fill our memory banks with valuable impressions that can be recalled whenever we need them.

Before we know it, school will be starting, and pumpkins will emerge in giant bins at every grocery store. But just for today, let’s think about today, and enjoy what a wonderful summer day it truly is!

Quick Stress Reducing Strategies

1. Fold your hands in prayer behind your back. When we get stressed we tend to tense up, and cave our chest in. This opens up our chest, so we can breathe more freely. Pull the shoulders back, tilt the head back, and breathe deeply.

2. Rub the circumference of each ear with your hands. Right hand rubbing the right ear and left hand rubbing the left ear. According to Ayurveda, India's 5,000 year old Science of Life, there are marma points (like acupuncture points) in the ears that correspond to the various parts of the body. Rubbing the ears in this way is like giving yourself a little mini massage!

3. Stop and smell the flowers. Keep some lavender essential oil in your desk or purse. When you feel stressed, bring it out. Close your eyes and breathe in the fragrance. Count to 5. Then exhale through your mouth to the count of 5. According to Aromatherapy, lavender is very calming. and when we close our eyes it isolates the sense of smell so that we feel it more intensely.

4. Present moment awareness. Most of the time, when we're stressed it is because we are living in either the future or the past. Bring yourself into present moment awareness by focusing on the now. Use your senses, which connect us to our environment. Hug yourself, to be more "in your body" instead of in your mind where the stress is. Look at something beautiful, a flower, a bird, the sky, and just be with that for a moment. Take a sip of sweet tea, and really taste it, and enjoy it. Be grateful in that moment, and stress just washes away. Gratitude and stress cannot be present at the same time!

5. Sit in your desk chair, or kitchen table chair - left foot on the floor, put your right ankle on your left knee, and learn forward with a stretch. Hold it as far as you can go, then bend forward a little more. This opens up your hips, and again balances that tensed up muscle feeling. Do each side equally.

I didn't write this, I got sent it via e-mail... and it made me laugh so I wanted to share with you!

MURPHY'S LAWS FOR PARENTS..

1. The tennis shoes you must replace today will go on sale next week.

2. Leakproof thermoses will.

3. The chances of a piece of bread falling with the grape jelly side down is directly proportional to the cost of the carpet.

4. The garbage truck will be two doors past your house when the argument over whose day it is to take out the trash ends.

5. The shirt your child must wear today will be the only one that needs to be washed or mended.

6. Gym clothes left at school in lockers mildew at a faster rate than other clothing.

7. The item your child lost, and must have for school within the next ten seconds, will be found in the last place you look.

8. Sick children recover miraculously when the pediatrician enters the treatment room.

9. Refrigerated items, used daily, will gravitate toward the back of the refrigerator.

10.
Momnesia

If you think you’ve been a little forgetful lately, you’re not going crazy, you might just have “momnesia.” I can remember finding cartons of milk that I had put away in the cupboard instead of the refrigerator, and ice cream in the fridge instead of the freezer. Typically momnesia starts after you have a baby – it’s brought on by the fluctuating hormones that come with pregnancy, childbirth and breast-feeding. Then of course, sleep deprivation contributes to it, too. When does a new mom ever get a full night’s sleep? Plus we’re learning so many new things at once that our brains go on overload! Maybe this is nature’s way of making us forget the rigors of the childbirth experience. But then we get so busy taking care of kids that we’re often in the momnesia mode. We just learn how to better cope with it, to become more efficient by writing things down. We also need to learn how to set boundaries, and not feel obligated to say yes to every mom job that comes along. We just physically, and mentally, can’t do everything, as much as we’d like to believe we can! Also, exercise helps quite a bit, as well as meditation. And having a good attitude, and a sense of humor about your momnesia, goes a long way!

The Female Brain by Louann Brizendine

Mom's Fashion Tips

We're busy going back to school shopping for our kids clothes... but Mom, don't forget about you! It can be a hassle worrying about fashion, but it really is a must. Here are some tips to help get you back in style if you've been focused on the kids for too long:

-Forget about "trendy" and start thinking "classic" and "updated." Trendy is for teens, and something you buy that is "in" this season may be out next season. What you really want are age-appropriate clothes that fit and are stylish so that you both feel good and look good.

-Yes, kids are messy - life is messy! Choose fabrics that are washable and easy to care for. You don't need to be spending money on dry cleaning and adding one more thing to your "to do" list.

-Skip the sweats. I know it's tempting to just be comfortable - but sweats look sloppy. You will look much more pulled together in separates.

-When you find a pair of pants or a tee shirt or a sweater that works for you, buy it in every color! Then mix and match with the other separates and you basically have a uniform. For example, capris in khaki, black and white + and tees in white, black and blue = nine different "nothing to think about" outfits.

-Shop online. This way you don't have to haul the kids out to the mall and into the dressing room to create havoc while you attempt to try on clothes. Sites like oldnavy.com have really affordable clothes, often on sale, that fit your lifestyle.

-You can add some trendy style if you choose with comfortable and colorful sneakers like Vans or Skechers.

-Remember that you are setting an example for your kids. Take care of yourself, know that you are worth it, and they will learn to take care of themselves, too.
